compounds

being
cyclic
esters
which
may
be
regarded
as
anhydrides
of
certain
hydroxy
acids
.
In
general
,
they
are
colorless
liquids
,
having
a
weak
aromatic
odor
.
They
are
so
called
because
the
typical
lactone
is
derived
from
lactic
acid
.
