surface carburetor, oralternativelyafloat carburetor (calledalsofloat-feed carburetor, orspray carburetor). Intheformerairischargedbybeingpassedoverthesurfaceofgasoline. Inthelatterafinesprayofgasolineisdrawnfromanatomizingnozzlebyacurrentofairinducedbythesuctionoftheenginepiston, thesupplyofgasolinebeingregulatedbyafloatwhichactuatesaneedlevalvecontrollingtheoutletofthefeedpipe. Alcoholandothervolatileinflammableliquidsmaybeusedinsteadofgasoline.
