Yaz´oo Fraud
Yazoo Companiesfromtheregiongranted ; - commonlysocalled, theactbeingknownastheYazoo Frauds Act, becauseofallegedcorruptionofthelegislature, everymemberbutonebeingashareholderinoneormoreofthecompanies. Theactgrantingthelandwasrepealedin1796byanewlegislature, andtherepealingprovisionwasincorporatedintheStateconstitutionin1798. In1802theterritorywascededtotheUnitedStates. Theclaimsofthepurchasers, whomGeorgiahadrefusedtocompensate, weresustainedbytheUnitedStatesSupremeCourt, which (1810) declaredtherepealingactof1796unconstitutional. Congressin1814orderedthelandssoldandappropriated $5,000,000topaytheclaims.
