small
American
woodpeckers
of
the
genus
Sphyrapicus
,
especially
the
yellow-bellied
woodpecker
(

varius
)
of
the
Eastern
United
States
.
They
are
so
named
because
they
puncture
the
bark
of
trees
and
feed
upon
the
sap
.
The
name
is
loosely
applied
to
other
woodpeckers
.
