Portland
stone
of
England
,
made
by
calcining
an
artificial
mixture
of
carbonate
of
lime
and
clay
,
or
sometimes
certain
natural
limestones
or
chalky
clays
.
It
contains
a
large
proportion
of
clay
,
and
hardens
under
water
.
