formed
by
condensation
of
the
anhydride
of
phthalic
acid
and
phenol
.
Its
solution
in
alkalies
is
brilliant
red
,
but
is
decolorized
by
acids
.
This
reaction
,
being
very
delicate
,
is
used
as
an
indicator
.
It
is
sometimes
used
as
a
laxative
in
veterinary
medicine
.
