A
form
of
sentence
among
the
ancient
Syracusans
by
which
they
banished
for
five
years
a
citizen
suspected
of
having
dangerous
influence
or
ambition
.
It
was
similar
to
the
ostracism
in
Athens
;
but
olive
leaves
were
used
instead
of
shells
for
ballots
.
