large
brass
wind
instrument
,
formerly
used
in
the
orchestra
and
in
military
bands
,
having
a
loud
tone
,
deep
pitch
,
and
a
compass
of
three
octaves
; -
now
generally
supplanted
by
bass
and
contrabass
tubas
.
It
developed
from
the
older
wooden
instrument
called
the
serpent
.
