herons
which
bear
plumes
on
the
back
.
They
are
generally
white
.
Among
the
best
known
species
are
the
American
egret
(

syn
.

);
the
great
egret
(
Ardea
alba
);
the
little
egret
(
Ardea
garzetta
),
of
Europe
;
and
the
American
snowy
egret
(
Ardea
candidissima
).

plumage
