debenture bonds) are generally, through not necessarily, under seal, and are usuallysecured by a mortgage or other chargeuponproperty; they may be registered or unregistered. A debenturesecured by a mortgage on specificproperty is called a mortgage debenture; one secured by a floatingcharge (which see), a floating debenture; one not secured by any chargea naked debenture. In general the termdebenture in Britishusagedesignates any securityissued by companies other than their shares, including, therefore, what are in the UnitedStatescommonlycalledbonds. When used in the UnitedStatesdebenturegenerallydesignates an instrumentsecured by a floatingchargejunior to other chargessecured by fixedmortgages, or, specif., one of a series of securitiessecured by a group of securitiesheld in trust for the benefit of the debentureholders.
